I thought I'd discuss a few things about comics that aren't normally covered like what gets in a person blood who is addicted to comics. That same person has to visit his comic store at least once a month if not every single Wednesday to check out that weeks goodie pile. For me, it's plain and simple and to the point. I love the art! Don't get me wrong, I love the occasional story line twist that some of the heroes in tights have and I've read my share but if the cover doesn't catch my eye, I'll have a hard time picking it up. Some of my favorite artist in the comic biz are actually painters (Biz, Alex Ross, Linsner and on and on)and it's their paintings that catch my eye. When you can make steel from water color you know you have figured it out! Comic Books are the modern day art gallery and each week a different theme showing and maybe it's not as good as it was yesterday but it's here and eternal documented for anyone who wishes to see. Another thing that draws me to comics is that the field is wide open, freedom of speech and in your face if it wants to be, innovatively exciting! I've been in the field for twenty years and I've noticed that the last 2 recessions we've had that comics stayed the same or possibly even flourished during those lean times and I have a theory on that. I could be wrong but during trying times it seems is when you see the best out of people. It seems that we find a reserve or a different vein and pull out something a little sharper, just a little more refined that we would have the year before. Because of that new found reserve the art seems better and the public picks up on it and buys more comics. Or could just be the $2.99 price tag!
Ain't it good to be G!
